The two old staging inns in the village were the Peacock shown here and the Wheatsheaf. Both were present by the early 1700s, perhaps much earlier and would have been a welcome sight, especially in bad weather.

The Wheatsheaf Hotel. Old, but rebuilt sometime in the 1800s.
The Devonshire Arms started as The Barrel Inn around 1800. It was replaced by a grander building in 1851 to cater for the early tourist trade.
