1.2 Memorial Inscriptions

Baslow Main Churchyard

The recording of the inscriptions on the memorial stones in Baslow Graveyard was started by the Baslow Women’s Institute in the 1980s. I took over about 1990, mapped the graveyard and completed the recording and photgraphed all the stones. Off and on, it took nearly 20 years. For more detaiil read 1.2af about the project. I hope all the data is accurate but inevitably there will be errors. I also have photographs of each gravestone which, if I am available, I can forward to you (no charge).

Each stone has a number, eg A34 or P05. The letter refers to the group (see the map below|), and the number is its position witin the group.

1 To find a grave number use the Index, which lists names (and years of birth) alphabetically.

2 Use the Grave number to find a summary of each person listed on the gravestone . The details are are name, date of death, age at death, relationship to the main person, and year of birth. (the last item may be calculated)

The Parish Council Burial Ground

All burials since 1976 have ben in the Parish Council burial ground, which is south east of the main churchyard. Access is through the churchyard. On entering, the section on your left is for the burial of ashes.. Updated Dec 2022

The information is arranged in the same way as for the main Churchyard. To find a Grave Number eg N09c use the 1.2bc Index of Names. Once you have a grave number find all its occupants in 1.2ba List of Graves. Scroll down to the number, or search for it in the FIND facility

To find the full inscription of your chosen gravestone, select 1.2bb Full Inscription where is a summary in italix, then the full wording. The Plot No is the official number used by the Parish Council.

1.2bd Diagram of graves is plan showing the position of the gravestones. The first row is the furthest from the main road: The letters, a to i, are from left to right when viewed from the road, N is north of the main path ie nearest to the main churchyard, S is south of it

In return for photos I would welcome information that I can keep for my records and perhaps add to this website.  You might consider a donation of a pound or two to your local church or other charity.    David
